She had gotten called into her supervisor’s office. She shoved a loose curl into place. “Nervous much?” Haymitch was hovering in the hall. “No. Why should I be?” The escort of District 9 had vanished. That was the way it worked. Someone vanished, someone rose to a better slot in the career machine of the Capitol. “Grain – well that would be a change in the tributes’ clothes. Looking forward to that?” Effie ignored his growled comment and tugged at her berry colored suit.
“Ms. Trinket, could you please join us?” She nervously smiled and stepped into the office. In the end it turned out to be a review and no new placement offer. It was written all over her face when she closed the door behind her. She straightened herself up and marched down the hall. “Already feeling too high and mighty to take notice of me?” He was still there.
She came to a sudden halt and only half turned to him. “No,” she said without looking at him, nervously clicking her long, painted nails. “I’m sorry.” He said quietly, suddenly missing his usual mocking tone. “Don’t be.” Only the idea of a smile glistered across her lips, when she thought that District 12 wasn’t too bad at all.
